A yellow-colored Fecl₃∙6H₂O can be obtained by oxidizing and purifying chlorine in an aqueous solution of iron chloride, all of which are harmful and hydrolyzed to become strongly acidic.
Used as coagulant for wastewater and feces treatments and a filter for sludge dewatering.
